“This music speaks to you in a natural voice. You don’t have that in modern music anywhere else. In Cuba it is there everyday, flowing like a river.” — Ry Cooder

The man behind the Buena Vista Social Club, Cuban bandleader, producer, and extraordinary impresario, Juan de Marcos, brought together the cream of Cuba’s expatriate musicians, friends, and long-time collaborators to form the Afro-Cuban All Stars.  After several years of tremendous and unexpected success following their genesis in the early 1990s – including four Grammy nominations, featuring in several documentaries and films, and receiving many other distinctions – the All Stars have certainly become one of the best-known and successful Cuban orchestras today.

Many of the musicians in the Afro-Cuban All Stars will be delightfully familiar to fans of artists like Ibrahim Ferrer or Omara Portuondo as they formed the core of the unique ensembles that backed Cuban music greats who the world rediscovered through de Marcos’ efforts.  Others, such as percussionist Calixto Oviedo, have backed international stars from James Brown to String.

As its name implies, the Juan de Marcos and Afro-Cuban All Stars is more of a project than a band. Like an expert chef, Juan de Marcos changes ingredients with the seasons and the dinner guests. “This band will sound and even behave exactly like one coming straight from Havana,” says de Marcos with a laugh. “Cubans never change and if you’ve been in Miami you’d know what I mean; dominos, mojitos, pork, chicharrones, and all!”  The All Stars, now incorporating a younger generation of Cuban artists alongside legendary performers, can always be counted on to promote the full range of Cuban music, one that embraces several generations and all musical styles.  Current projects include the recording of the albums Breaking the Rules and Step Backwardhttp://afrocubaweb.com/afrocubanallstars.htm
