It takes an artist of tremendous talent to endure decades of popularity and a good following. It’s not enough that one’s songs are played on the airwaves during weekends and Throwback Thursdays. Being able to make people smile and look back at the memories those songs were associated it with is what makes an artist worthy to go back and take center stage after years of absence.

Singer and songwriter Lionel Richie is one of them. Lionel Richie began making hit songs in the late 70s and early 80s. He is best remembered for his songs “Hello”,”Three Times A Lady”, “Stuck On You”, “Lady” featuring Kenny Rogers, “Still,” and “Easy.”

Among the distinctions he holds is being a 5-time Grammy award winner, recipient of the World Music Lifetime Achievement Award and  having some 100 million albums sold all over the world in the span of his career.

Lionel’s success story is one for the books. He was born and raised in Tuskegee, Alabama within a small and at that time, still  isolated African American community. He comes from a line of musicians and military men. His mother was an English teacher and this is why Lionel grew up a stickler for proper grammar. He has one sister, Deborah, who chose to further a career in education.  As a young man, Lionel’s interest was tennis and music. He first joined a campus group called The Mystics. This group was later known as The Commodores.

Later on, Lionel Richie, vocalist, pianist, and saxophonist became a  songwriter to many other talented contemporaries. He wrote and sang  “Endless Love” with dear friend and superstar, Diana Ross.  He earned an  Oscar and a Golden Globe for Say You, Say Me. His  “Dancing On The Ceiling” released in 1986 became a pop and R&B classic. “We Are The World”, which he co wrote with King of Pop, Michael Jackson, is now considered a classic.

Lionel is one of the most respected names in the industry and his influence was once again seen when he became one of the celebrity judges on “American Idol.”

His eighth studio album entitled “Coming Home” was released in September 2006. The carrier single “I Call It Love” became his biggest hit in the U.S. in ten years. He continued to produce music and set up International tours. He goes to  Asia, Australia, Africa to the UK, Europe, Malaysia and Saudi Arabia – where he is being received by a warm audience.

This September, fans of Lionel Richie and those who miss the music of his generation, will be treated to a series of performances. It will truly be a blast from the past as Lionel is expected to belt out his songs and do his signature moves as only he can deliver.
