Wednesday – February 19, 2014 (Los Angeles, CA)  L.A. music legend Art Laboe will bring his old school flavor indoors for the inaugural Art Laboe Block Party.  Presented by Hot 92.3 FM, this concert event will feature classic funk, soul and hip-hop artists like the S.O.S. Band, Zapp, the Sugar Hill Gang and more.  The party gets started at the iconic – and newly reimagined – “Fabulous” Forum on Friday, April 18.

Art Laboe Block Party tickets will go on sale Friday, February 21 at 10 AM and will be available at www.livenation.com.

The S.O.S. Band hit the Top 5 of the Billboard Pop and R&B charts in the early 80’s with funky, percussive hits like “Take Your Time (Do It Right),” “Just Be Good To Me” and “The Finest.”  Zapp, powered by Roger Troutman’s signature talk box, took funk to a new level with classics tracks like “More Bounce to the Ounce” and “So Ruff So Tuff.”  Rock and Roll Hall of Fame members Sugar Hill Gang also changed the game as “Rapper’s Delight” helped put rap and hip-hop on the national scene.  One Way scored three Top 10 R&B hits including their biggest smash, “Cutie Pie.”  Club Nouveau earned a Grammy Award for R&B Song of the Year with their version of the classic “Lean On Me.”  Fellow Grammy winner A Taste Of Honey brought infectious disco grooves to the airwaves and topped the charts with “Boogie Oogie Oogie.”  Klymaxx at once broke industry barriers as one of the first all-female R&B groups and sales records with hits like “I Miss You” and “Meeting in the Ladies Room.”  Evelyn “Champagne” King‘s rich, seductive voice stood at the forefront of hits like the Top 10 single “Shame,” while The Dazz Band‘s insistent beats made tracks like “Let It Whip” at home both on the radio and in the club.  They also took home a Grammy award for R&B Vocal Group with the Top 5 hit.

Art Laboe is responsible for many “firsts” in the radio and record business.  Art was the first Disc Jockey to play Rock and Roll on the West Coast airwaves, one of the first DJs to play both black and white artists and the first DJ to have an “Elvis Hour,” the entire hour devoted to Elvis Presley.  When Elvis and the Colonel first came to Hollywood, it was Art Laboe that got the first and only radio interview.  In conjunction with Dick Clark, Art Laboe produced the first sold out Rock ‘n’ Roll concert at the Hollywood Bowl.  He continues to pack venues today: the annual Art Laboe Show Live  has been a summertime staple for over a decade.  Art is recognized as the first person to coin the term “Oldies But Goodies™” and with that title he assembled  the first compilation album in American history, featuring hits by different artists.  Oldies But Goodies, Volume 1 stayed on Billboard’s Top 100 LP’s chart for over three years!
