JAZZMOBILE CONTINUES CELEBRATING ITS 50th ANNIVERSARY
at the Fifth Annual Harlem Jazz Shrines Festival May 4 – 9

This year the Festival will also pay tribute to the iconic Jazzmobile as a Shrine
HARLEM, USA, April 14, 2015 – Jazzmobile continues its 50th anniversary celebration May 4 – 9 at the Fifth Annual Harlem Jazz Shrines Festival, a week-long, multi-venue partnership with the Apollo Theater, Harlem Stage and Jazzmobile,in collaboration with Columbia University. The festivalrevives the spirits and sounds of Harlem’s historic jazz venues with swinging live performances, jam sessions, informative panel discussions, dance parties and more.
“This past July, we began celebrating 50 years of Dr. Billy Taylor’s vision, Jazzmobile. In keeping with his dedication to Jazz and community, we are delighted to continue the partnership, for the fifth year with these other important Harlem institutions,” said Robin Bell-Stevens, Director of Jazzmobile. “As we step out of the City parks and streets of Harlem to bring the mood, music and memory of Minton’s Playhouse, Café Society, and our very own Jazzmobile, inside to the elegant Minton’s Restaurant, Ginny’s Supper Club at the Red Rooster, Alhambra, James Chapel and, with the City College Arts, Aaron Davis Hall. Our audience will swing to the legends and the hot sounds of the young performers playing America’s own music: Jazz!”
Jazzmobile will present: composer, innovative drummer Will Calhoun; author, columnist, jazz historian: Stanley Crouch; big Swing Band leader, George Gee; composer, educator and “America’s number one trombonist,” Wycliffe Gordon; the legendary composer, educator, band leader, author, NEA Jazz Master and a co-founder of Jazzmobile’s programs, Jimmy Heath; “a young B.B. King,” blues and jazz guitarist (and former Jazzmobile student) Solomon Hicks; Latin Jazz Master, composer, educator, percussionist, Bobby Sanabria;composer, vocalist, and former Ray Charles Raelette, Cynthia Scott; “rising star,” vocalist, educator: Charenee Wade; and a Jazzmobile tradition will continue as additional Special Guest performers join the band stand.
