Celebrating the extraordinary heritage of Cuban music, acclaimed Cuban pianist Daniel Amat, accompanied by some of the most sought after Latin musicians in Los Angeles, will pay tribute to Cuba’s most prolific composers in a special concert, Friday, June 19th. The event will be held at the Mark Taper Forum in the Music Center, (located at 135 N. Grand Avenue,) in downtown Los Angeles from 8:00 p.m. to Daniel Amat at JavaJazz10:00 p.m. Showcasing the classical side of Cuban music,(reminiscent of the “Buena Vista Social Club”) from Contradanza to the Mambo, the concert will feature the music of Ignacio Cervantes,(1895-1963), Ernesto Lecuona,(1895-1963), and Israel ‘Cachao’ Lopez, (1918-2008),creator of the modern Mambo and and master of thedescarga, (improvised Cuban jam sessions).

The Pacific Jazz Institute at Dimitriou’s Jazz Alley presents Juan de Marcos and the Afro-Cuban All Stars for 3 nights only!  Band members are Juan de Marcos (guitar and vocals), Gliceria (percussion) Glicy (keys and vocals), Lauri (bass clarinet), Calixto (timbale set), Pepito (congas), Tony (bongos and cowbell), Gabrielito (piano), Panta (vocals), El Galan (vocals), Emilio (vocals), Gilito (vocals), Alberto (trumpet), Migue (trumpet), Yoanny and (trumpet).There will be one show each night at 7:30. Doors open at 6pm on Tuesday and 5:30pm on Wednesday and Thursday.

The man behind the Buena Vista Social Club, Cuban bandleader, producer, and extraordinary impresario, Juan de Marcos, brought together the cream of Cuba’s expatriate musicians, friends, and long-time collaborators to form the Afro-Cuban All Stars.  After several years of tremendous and unexpected success following their genesis in the early 1990s – including four Grammy nominations, featuring in several documentaries and films, and receiving many other distinctions – the All Stars have certainly become one of the best-known and successful Cuban orchestras today.
