LOS ANGELES, Aug. 29, 2011 /PRNewswire/ —

WHO

The Los Angeles County Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® will join recording artist and Komen Circle of Promise spokesperson Kelly Price for a special summer concert and community outreach effort at Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza.

The Susan G. Komen for the Cure® Los Angeles County Affiliate has distributed more than $9 million to fund breast cancer programs and research since 1996, which have gone to provide the medically underserved and uninsured populations in Los Angeles County with screening, diagnostic tests and treatments for breast cancer.

WHAT

The concert is part of the BHCP Live! Summer Concert Series.  A free, outdoor entertainment event designed to offer a family friendly experience for shoppers and neighborhood residents to enjoy award winning artists and quality music in the beautiful newly renovated mall promenade.

Komen LA will have an information tent with volunteers and information for guests interested in the free health screening services offered in the community.  Kelly Price who was personally touched by breast cancer when both her mother in law and mom were diagnosed with breast cancer within two months of each other, is an avid supporter of breast cancer awareness and an official Circle of Promise Ambassador.

Kelly Price will do a meet and greet with guests immediately following the concert and invite attendees to sign up for the Susan G. Komen Circle of Promise.  The Circle of Promise movement is designed to engage African American women to help end breast cancer forever by fostering increased awareness, support, empowerment and action.  The program works by (1) Mobilizing the community to ensure that women everywhere have access to the care they need; (2) Empowering women to make a promise to reclaim their lives, their health and to be strong advocates in their communities and (3) Dispelling myths in the African American community that prevent women from  early treatment for breast cancer.

WHEN

Wednesday, August 31, 2011
7:00pm

WHERE

Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza, Promenade
3650 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90008

WHY

Twice as many African American women die of late stage breast cancer than their white counterparts.  As a result, Komen LA has launched an African American Initiative to raise awareness of free services in the community to combat these statistics amongst African American women and men.  Early detection is the goal.  Ninety eight percent of women who detect breast cancer in its early stages, survive.
