Cuban Singing Legend Omara Portuondo Celebrates 70 Years of Music Magic at Disney Hall Headlining a Multi–Cultural World–Jazz Bill
To witness a concert performance by Omara Portuondo is to be whisked on a journey into the beating heart of Cuba as escorted by a diva who paints her country’s sprawling portrait with richness and reverence. 85 years young, a Grammy–winner (2008’s magnificent CD, Gracias) and an artistic ambassador of her country, Ms. Portuondo is bringing her celebration of heritage and country to Disney Hall in Downtown Los Angeles on Wednesday October 5in the midst of her 85th birthday and 70 years of professional performing.
This aural and visual fiesta will showcase the full sweep of Omara’s illustrious career as she interprets timeless Cuban classics – from the music of her youth to elegant cabaret to her collaborations with the fabled Buena Vista Social Club on up to the music of present day Cuba. With the political climate changing and warming to Cuba’s more open embrace, now is an amazing time to witness the one of the country’s most beloved living legends of song.
Joining Omara Portuondo for this multicultural evening of music will be Cuban pianist and musical director Roberto Fonseca, African American jazz violinist Regina Carter, and Jewish jazz clarinetist/saxophonist Anat Cohen. All of the artists will perform timeless classic Cuban repertoire as well as songs from their own career and canon.
