Havana to Harlem: 100 Years of Mario Bauzá, a special tribute concert to the “Godfather” of Afro Cuban Jazz – Mario Bauzá on Saturday, June 18th as part of its newest series, Cross Cultural Exchange. The concert is a collaboration with TeatroStageFest, New York’s Latino International Theater Festival. Four-time Grammy nominee, consummate drummer/percussionist and band leader Bobby Sanabria and his Bobby Sanabria Big Band bring Bauzá’s music back to the Apollo and pay tribute to the legendary musician for this exclusive engagement. The Pacific Jazz Institute at Dimitriou’s Jazz Alley presents Juan de Marcos and the Afro-Cuban All Stars for 3 nights only!  Band members are Juan de Marcos (guitar and vocals), Gliceria (percussion) Glicy (keys and vocals), Lauri (bass clarinet), Calixto (timbale set), Pepito (congas), Tony (bongos and cowbell), Gabrielito (piano), Panta (vocals), El Galan (vocals), Emilio (vocals), Gilito (vocals), Alberto (trumpet), Migue (trumpet), Yoanny and (trumpet).There will be one show each night at 7:30. Doors open at 6pm on Tuesday and 5:30pm on Wednesday and Thursday.

The man behind the Buena Vista Social Club, Cuban bandleader, producer, and extraordinary impresario, Juan de Marcos, brought together the cream of Cuba’s expatriate musicians, friends, and long-time collaborators to form the Afro-Cuban All Stars.  After several years of tremendous and unexpected success following their genesis in the early 1990s – including four Grammy nominations, featuring in several documentaries and films, and receiving many other distinctions – the All Stars have certainly become one of the best-known and successful Cuban orchestras today. The Pacific Jazz Institute at Dimitriou’s Jazz Alley welcomes Latin Jazz Timbalero Pete Escovedo, featuring drumming sensation Sheila E.  Band members are Pete Escovedo (leader, timbales), Sheila E. (drums), Juan Escovedo (Congas), Joe Rotondi (piano), Marc Van Wageningen (bass), Mario Gonzales (trumpet), Doug Beavers (trombone), Joel Behrman (trombone) and Alex Murzyn (saxophone, flute).  Set times Thursday – Saturday at 7:30pm and 9:30pm.  Set time Sunday at 7:30pm. Doors open at 6:00pm on Thursday and 5:30pm Friday – Sunday.

Legendary Percussionist Pete Escovedo broke down the barriers between Smooth Jazz, Salsa, Latin Jazz and contemporary music. Born in Pittsburg, CA, July 13, 1935, he began his musical journey while attending high school in Oakland, CA. At the age of sixteen, he began playing the saxophone and then discovered percussion which became his love of rhythm and his dream of playing Latin Jazz music. To continue, Please click “MORE”!

Berklee Presents Latin Music and Culture Celebration in November

Berklee presents its 12th annual Latin Music and Culture Celebration,showcasing musicians from 30 countries, including Argentina, Colombia,Venezuela, Mexico, Chile, Peru, Brazil, and Spain, performing tango,flamenco, Latin jazz, salsa, merengue, traditional Venezuelan cuatro,and Afro-Cuban. The celebration features concerts by Mariano Martos, Maria Mulata, Nando Michelin, C4, Rodolfo Reyes, Larry Harlow, Almir Cortes, and several student groups. A unique program of additional events include a Day of the Dead Celebration; clinics and discussions with faculty, alumni, and guest artists; a documentary film screening;dance classes; capoeira/yoga classes; and networking sessions.
