MEET OUR HONOREES:

Randy Weston: Legends of Jazz Award
After contributing seven decades of musical direction and genius, Randy Weston remains one of the world’s foremost pianists and composers, a true innovator and visionary. Encompassing the vast rhythmic heritage of Africa, his global creations musically continue to inform and inspire. “Weston has the biggest sound of any jazz pianist since Ellington and Monk, as well as the richest, most inventive beat,” says critic Stanley Crouch. “But his art is more than projection and time. It’s the result of a studious and inspired intelligence . . . an intelligence that is creating a fresh synthesis of African elements with jazz technique.”

Jazzmobile: Jazz and Community Leadership Award
Founded in 1964 by pianist Billy Taylor and philanthropist and arts leader Ms. Daphne Anstein, Jazzmobile is the first U.S. not-for-profit arts organization created just for jazz. From the beginning, they’ve brought high-quality jazz performances and education program to over four million people in NYC and around the world. Whether on the street, in a park, or at a concert hall, Jazzmobile enriches our culture and imbues new life into the surrounding area. They are a proud inspiration to organizations across the country, including the Manchester Craftsmen’s Guild, Jazz at Lincoln Center, and of course, The National Jazz Museum in Harlem.

Arthur H. Barnes: Award for Extraordinary Commitment and Contributions to Jazz and the Community
As both an exceptional professional, a dedicated patron, and passionate advocate and leader, Arthur H. Barnes has had a profound and lasting impact on the jazz community in New York City. As HIP Health Plan of New York’s Senior Vice President for External Affairs and Corporate Contributions, he promoted the health and well-being of the diverse communities that make up New York City. A lifelong jazz fan, Barnes brought HIP and jazz together, supporting The Charlie Parker Jazz Festival, Jazz at Lincoln Center, and Jazzmobile, among so many others. He is former Chairman of the Board of Governors for the Jazz and Contemporary Music Program at New School University, which makes a lot of sense, given his intimate knowledge of the music and the musicians who created it. And of course, The National Jazz Museum in Harlem would not be where we are today were it not for his leadership as our former Chairman of the Board.
