Jazz is an American art form that has been embraced by the big cities such as Chicago & New York, but the smaller towns are proud to feature the expanding jazz history with resounding success. Since the City of Hampton’s (Virginia) first jazz festival in 1968, fans from all over the U.S. partake of shows throughout the year fueling those American roots. Besides various venues hosting jazz showcases, two festivals – the Hampton Jazz & Music Festival in June and the Phoebus Jazz Festival in September highlighting national and local musicians – lead up to a key music event in the mid-Fall.
With just over three months away, be sure to mark the date for the annual biggest extravaganza in the Jazz Legacy Foundation 14th Annual Gala Weekend from November 11-15. The gala provides a fundraising platform to support education opportunities in regional schools, such as the Portsmouth Public School, where instruments and other services are provided to the students who desire to learn practical life skills of a musician.
Past Gala artists include Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue, Gregory Porter, and James Lloyd. Five days of jazz, sprinkled with R&B, soul and funk are in store with some special attractions including a very late night jam, smooth jazz cruise and a tribute to an extraordinary music legend.
